Myself and some friends just returned from a 7 day stay at the Riu Yucatan. What a huge MISTAKE. I have been a loyal customer to the Riu Resorts for more than 15 years, having stayed in Playa Del Carmen 9 times now. We normally stay at the Riu Palace and our stays have been some of the most memorable in my life. This Resort, in my opinion should not be permitted to call itself a Riu. The Hotel is run down, dirty, and in need of friendly staff members. The food in the theme restaurants is no better than the food at the buffet. Which isn't saying much. All four of us ended up sick at one point during our trip, which also has never happened while staying in Playa.
Let me just point out some of the big problems!
According to Sun Trips Website this Hotel has beautiful rooms. That is not the case at all. The rooms are small, musty, dirty and in need of serious attention. Suntrips also states that this resort has 24 hour room service. Not only does it not have 24 hour room service, they do not have room service at all. The mini bar is a joke. While there is alcohol available, finding a mix is next to impossible. They do not restock your frig daily as they claim unless you ask, and unless you speak spanish, this is a difficult task.
The front desk may be open 24 hours, but after about 10:00 there is nobody there, so if you need something-GOOD LUCK. Not to mention the staff at the front desk is rude and insulting. I was continually addressed in spanish as "White Girl"
Towels-what a disaster trying to get new pool towels. You are issued cards to obtain pool/beach towels. At the end of the day you turn in your towels and are provided with your cards. We had an early morning snorkel scheduled and tried turning in our wet towels for dry towels around 4:00 p.m. They WILL NOT give you towels for the next day. We even contacted the front desk about this and could not get clean towels.
Now lets talk about the bars: The drinks are weak, small and there is no, and I mean NO top shelf alcohol available at this resort.
The bottom line here is that the Riu Palace has all of these amenities including a friendly hard working staff. Do yourself a favor and pay the additional $45.00 per night to stay at the Palace. You will not be sorry, I promise.
I tried taking my traveling companions to the Riu Palace so they could see that all Riu Resorts were not as awful as this one, and we were not allowed on the premises. We were however permitted to use all facilities at the Riu Tequila. This resort is across the street from the Yucatan and shares their beach. This resort is clean, the staff was friendly and the drinks were much better. So if you can't afford the Palace save yourself $25.00 per night and stay at the Tequila. _________________ TRACY MEYER |
