The Forest of Dean is one of the oldest forests in England. Shaped like a triangle, it extends over 102 square kilometers and still hides some traces of the past. And, despite having served as a royal hunting ground, it had been inhabited much earlier.
Thus, we can find monuments and megalithic remains of the passage of the Romans, who sought coal and iron. After the departure of the Romans, the forest served as a hunting ground for the Saxons and then to the Normans.
Later, with the Industrial Revolution, the forest became a kind of industrial complex, hosting mines of all kinds, plus foundries, settlements, railroads and cabins, among other buildings. Indeed, many parts of the movie were filmed in Gloucestershire, which is also the place where the writer was educated.
In fact, he lived on the southern edge of the forest between 1974 and 1983. So it is not strange to think that this period will influence him to include it in novels. On the other hand, it seems that this forest inspired to imagine the Middle Earth JRR Tolkien created in his most famous books.
